Raymond IV of Toulouse

Raymond IV (c. 1041–1105) was a count of Toulouse and a leading commander of the First Crusade. He founded the County of Tripoli in the Levant but died before its capture.

Urban II: Pope from 1088 to 1099 who called for the First Crusade at the Council of Clermont. Urban II’s appeal helped prompt Raymond to take the cross.
Siege of Nicaea: The 1097 crusader siege that ended when Nicaea surrendered to Byzantine forces. Raymond took part in the first major siege of the crusaders’ march east.
County of Toulouse: A medieval principality in southern France ruled by the counts of Toulouse. Raymond’s power and wealth rested on his inheritance of this principality.
County of Edessa: The first crusader state, established in northern Mesopotamia in 1098. Its establishment by Baldwin offered a model of territorial rule that Raymond also pursued.

Marquisate of Provence: A medieval title and territory associated with the lower Rhône and Provence. Raymond inherited claims to the marquisate, extending his authority beyond Toulouse.
Principality of Antioch: A crusader state founded around Antioch after its capture in 1098. Its creation intensified disputes over whether crusader leaders should rule conquered cities.
Bohemond I of Antioch: A Norman prince who led a crusading contingent and became ruler of Antioch. Bohemond’s pursuit of Antioch’s principality contrasted with Raymond’s claims and ambitions.
Siege of Jerusalem: The 1099 crusader siege that culminated in the capture of Jerusalem. Raymond helped lead the assault and was offered rule of the city.
