RC circuit

An electrical circuit containing resistance and capacitance. Its voltage and current often change exponentially as a capacitor charges or discharges through a resistor.

Capacitor: A component that stores electric charge and energy in an electric field. Its changing charge produces the characteristic voltage response in an RC circuit.
Low-pass filter: A filter that passes low-frequency signals more readily than high-frequency signals. A resistor and capacitor form a basic low-pass filter when output is taken across the capacitor.
Electrical resistance: The opposition a material or component presents to electric current. Resistance determines how quickly charge moves through the resistor in an RC circuit.
RL circuit: An electrical circuit containing resistance and inductance, with transient behavior shaped by their interaction. An RL circuit stores energy magnetically, unlike an RC circuit’s electric-field storage.
RC step response: The time-dependent voltage and current produced when an RC circuit receives a sudden input change. It describes the standard charging or discharging transient after a step in applied voltage.
Resistor: A component that opposes electric current and dissipates electrical energy as heat. It limits capacitor current and sets the circuit’s response rate.
High-pass filter: A filter that passes high-frequency signals more readily than low-frequency signals. The same two components form a high-pass filter when output is taken across the resistor.
Capacitance: The ratio of stored electric charge to the voltage across a component or conductor. Capacitance determines how much charge the circuit stores at a given voltage.
RLC circuit: An electrical circuit containing resistance, inductance, and capacitance. Adding inductance to an RC circuit can produce oscillatory responses and resonance.
RC charging: The increase of capacitor charge and voltage when connected to a source through resistance. Its exponential rise illustrates the time constant’s role in an RC circuit.
