Knowra REACH REACH REACH is a European Union regulation that requires chemicals to be registered and assessed, and enables authorization or restriction of substances to protect human health and the environment.
European Chemicals Agency : The EU agency that manages technical and administrative tasks for chemicals legislation, including REACH. ECHA receives registrations, evaluates dossiers, and supports REACH decisions.
Chemical substance : A chemical element or compound, including its additives and impurities, as defined for regulatory or scientific purposes. REACH obligations generally attach to substances, not simply to product names or brand formulations.
Candidate List of substances of very high concern : The ECHA list of substances identified as candidates for possible inclusion in REACH’s authorization system. Candidate List placement can trigger supply-chain communication and notification obligations.
European Union : A political and economic union of European countries with shared institutions and a common legal order. REACH is directly applicable EU legislation, implemented through the Union’s legal framework.
CLP Regulation : The EU regulation on classification, labelling, and packaging of substances and mixtures, aligned with the UN Globally Harmonized System. CLP communicates hazard classifications, while REACH governs registration and broader substance controls.
REACH registration : The REACH process requiring manufacturers and importers to submit information about substances they place on the EU market. Registration is REACH’s central information-gathering duty.
Mixture : A combination of two or more chemical substances that are not chemically bonded to one another. REACH rules distinguish substances from mixtures when setting registration and communication duties.
Annex XIV of REACH : The REACH annex listing substances subject to authorization, with specified sunset dates and possible application deadlines. A substance’s Annex XIV listing makes continued covered uses dependent on authorization.
Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 : The European Union regulation adopted in 2006 that established the REACH system for chemicals. This is the legal instrument commonly known by the acronym REACH.
RoHS Directive : The EU directive restricting certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment. RoHS targets specified substances in electronics, unlike REACH’s cross-sector chemicals framework.
