Rechargeable battery

An electrochemical cell or battery that can be restored to usable charge by passing electric current through it. Its charging reaction reverses the chemical changes that produced electrical energy.

Electrochemical cell: A device that converts chemical energy into electrical energy through redox reactions at electrodes. Rechargeable batteries are electrochemical cells whose reactions can be driven in reverse.
Lithium-ion battery: A rechargeable battery that stores energy by moving lithium ions between intercalation electrodes. It is a widely used rechargeable chemistry in portable electronics and electric vehicles.
Electric vehicle: A vehicle propelled partly or entirely by electric motors powered from an onboard energy source. Traction batteries determine an electric vehicle’s range, cost, and charging needs.
Primary cell: An electrochemical cell designed for use until its reactants are depleted rather than electrically recharged. Unlike rechargeable cells, primary cells are generally replaced after discharge.
Redox reaction: A chemical reaction in which electrons transfer between substances as oxidation and reduction occur. Electron transfer at the electrodes underlies both charging and discharging.
Lead–acid battery: A rechargeable battery that uses lead electrodes and sulfuric acid electrolyte. Its mature chemistry powers vehicle starters and backup systems.
Portable electronics: Electronic devices designed for use while carried, typically powered by compact batteries. Rechargeable cells make phones, laptops, and similar devices reusable without disposable batteries.
Fuel cell: An electrochemical device that generates electricity from continuously supplied fuel and oxidant. A fuel cell is replenished with reactants rather than recharged by reversing its cell reaction.
Electrode: An electrical conductor through which current enters or leaves an electrochemical system. Electrochemical reactions occur at the battery’s positive and negative electrodes.
Nickel–metal hydride battery: A rechargeable battery using a hydrogen-absorbing metal alloy negative electrode and a nickel oxyhydroxide positive electrode. It is an established alternative used in hybrid vehicles and consumer devices.
