Recitative

Recitative is a speech-like vocal style in opera and other vocal music, used to deliver dialogue and advance dramatic action, often with sparse accompaniment.

Sprechgesang: A vocal technique between speech and song, with pitches indicated but not sustained as in conventional singing. It also blurs speech and song, but is associated especially with modernist music rather than operatic dialogue.
Florentine Camerata: A group of scholars and musicians in late-sixteenth-century Florence who helped inspire early opera. Their experiments with expressive monody encouraged the speech-like singing that developed into recitative.
Da capo aria: An aria form with an opening section, a contrasting middle section, and a return to the opening section. Recitative often introduces the situation or decision that an ensuing da capo aria explores.
Aria: A solo vocal composition, usually with instrumental accompaniment, that expresses a character's feelings or perspective. An aria typically pauses dramatic exchange for musical reflection, unlike recitative's action-driving role.
Secco recitative: A recitative style accompanied mainly by continuo instruments, typically harpsichord and cello. Its lean continuo texture lets the words and dramatic pacing dominate.
Jacopo Peri: An Italian composer whose early operas helped establish the genre around 1600. His opera Euridice used recitative to carry dramatic dialogue.
Opera seria: An Italian opera genre of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, typically built around mythological or historical subjects. Its scenes commonly alternate recitative dialogue with arias.
Arioso: A vocal style or passage more melodic than recitative but less formally structured than an aria. Arioso occupies the expressive middle ground between recitative and aria.
Accompagnato recitative: A recitative style supported by orchestral accompaniment rather than continuo alone. Orchestral color and weight give pivotal speeches greater dramatic force.
Claudio Monteverdi: An Italian composer who transformed early opera and madrigal writing in the seventeenth century. His Orfeo developed recitative as a flexible vehicle for dramatic expression.
