Recusancy

Recusancy was the refusal by English Catholics to attend services of the established Church of England. It became a legally punishable form of religious nonconformity after the English Reformation.

Act of Uniformity 1559: An English statute that required attendance at Church of England services and prescribed the Book of Common Prayer. Its weekly attendance requirement made refusal a legal offense.
English Reformation: The series of religious and political changes that established Protestantism in England during the sixteenth century. It created the religious division from which recusancy emerged.
Elizabeth I: Queen of England and Ireland from 1558 to 1603, whose reign established a Protestant religious settlement. Her government made compulsory attendance a central test of conformity.
Penal laws against Catholics: English laws that restricted Catholic worship, officeholding, property, and political participation. Recusancy statutes formed one part of this wider system of religious disabilities.

Jesuit mission to England: The Catholic mission launched in 1580 to sustain and strengthen Catholicism in England. Jesuits served recusant communities and encouraged resistance to enforced conformity.
Elizabethan Religious Settlement: The laws and policies established under Elizabeth I that shaped the Church of England from 1559. Its settlement imposed the worship practices recusants refused.
