Recycled paper

Recycled paper is paper made partly or wholly from recovered paper fibers. Its production reuses fibers from discarded paper, though those fibers shorten with repeated recycling.

Paper recycling: The collection and processing of used paper into material for new paper products. It is the wider process that turns discarded paper into recycled paper.
Cellulose: A structural polysaccharide whose long chains form the main framework of plant cell walls. Cellulose is the principal structural material in the fibers recovered from paper.
Recycled paperboard: Paperboard made partly or wholly from recovered paper fibers. Recovered fibers are widely used in packaging board and box products.
Virgin paper: Paper made from fibers that have not previously been used to make paper. It provides the direct material comparison for recycled paper.
Life-cycle assessment: A method for evaluating environmental impacts across a product's life cycle. It compares recycled and virgin paper across production, transport, and disposal.
Deinking: The removal of printing inks and other contaminants from recovered paper fibers. It prepares many recovered fibers for lighter-colored recycled paper.
Wood pulp: A mass of separated plant fibers used as the main raw material for most paper. It is the fresh-fiber material often blended with recovered fibers.
Recycled tissue paper: Tissue paper made partly or wholly from recovered paper fibers. Tissue products can use recycled content, with quality depending on fiber furnish and processing.
Paper reuse: Using paper again for its original or a different purpose without reprocessing its fibers. Reuse extends a sheet's service life, whereas recycling breaks it down into pulp.
Waste paper: Discarded paper and paperboard that may be collected for reuse or recycling. Recycled paper depends on collecting suitable waste paper as feedstock.
