Red Turban Rebellions

The Red Turban Rebellions were fourteenth-century uprisings against the Yuan dynasty, driven by religious movements and regional forces. Their upheavals helped end Yuan rule and enabled the Ming dynasty’s founding.

White Lotus Society: A Chinese religious movement associated with Maitreya beliefs and periodic anti-government uprisings. Its millenarian ideas and networks helped inspire early Red Turban insurgents.
Guo Zixing: A rebel commander who led forces around Haozhou and became an early patron of Zhu Yuanzhang. His insurgent band gave Zhu Yuanzhang his first military base.
Han Lin'er: A claimant to imperial authority installed by northern Red Turban leaders as the Song emperor. His court supplied a nominal imperial center for Liu Futong’s faction.
Fall of the Yuan dynasty: The end of Yuan rule in China, conventionally dated to the Ming capture of Beijing in 1368. Red Turban warfare weakened the dynasty and opened the way for its withdrawal north.
Yuan dynasty: A Mongol-led dynasty that ruled China from 1271 to 1368. Fiscal strain, political instability, and weakened authority made Yuan rule vulnerable to revolt.
Zhu Yuanzhang: The rebel commander who founded the Ming dynasty as the Hongwu Emperor in 1368. He consolidated rebel territory and defeated rival forces before overthrowing the Yuan.
Zhang Shicheng: A salt smuggler turned rebel ruler who controlled parts of the lower Yangtze region. His independent regime competed with Zhu Yuanzhang for power in the south.
Ming conquest of Yuan China: The campaigns by which Zhu Yuanzhang’s forces defeated Yuan authority across China. These campaigns converted rebel victories into Ming territorial rule.
Yellow River floods: Major floods of northern China’s Yellow River, which often displaced communities and damaged agriculture. Flood-control failures and relief burdens aggravated hardship before the uprisings.
Chen Youliang: A rebel ruler who founded the Han regime and fought Zhu Yuanzhang for control of central China. Their contest at Poyang Lake eliminated a major rival to Zhu’s rise.
