Redox potential

Redox potential measures the tendency of a chemical species or environment to accept or donate electrons. It is expressed in volts relative to a reference electrode and depends on the redox couple and conditions.

Oxidation-reduction reaction: A chemical reaction in which electrons move between species, changing their oxidation states. Redox potential quantifies the electron-transfer tendency that drives these reactions.
Oxidation-reduction potential: A measured voltage indicating the oxidizing or reducing character of a solution. This practical measurement applies redox-potential concepts to complex samples.
Electron: A negatively charged subatomic particle that participates in chemical bonding and electrical conduction. Electron transfer is the microscopic event underlying oxidation and reduction.
pH: A logarithmic measure of hydrogen-ion activity in a solution. pH tracks proton activity, while redox potential tracks electron-transfer tendency.
Standard electrode potential: The potential of a redox couple measured under defined standard conditions against the standard hydrogen electrode. It provides the reference values from which redox potentials are compared.
Cellular respiration: The set of metabolic pathways by which cells extract energy from molecules, often using oxygen as the final electron acceptor. Electron carriers pass electrons through potential differences to support energy production.
Oxidation state: A formal charge assigned to an atom by treating its bonds as ionic. Changes in oxidation state track which atoms lose or gain electrons.
Galvanic cell: An electrochemical cell that produces electrical energy from a spontaneous redox reaction. Its measured cell voltage is a difference, not an individual absolute electrode potential.
Nernst equation: An equation relating an electrochemical cell’s potential to its standard potential and the activities of reacting species. It shows how concentrations and conditions shift a redox couple’s potential.
Corrosion: The deterioration of a material, usually a metal, through chemical or electrochemical reactions with its environment. Local potential differences can drive the oxidation reactions that damage metals.
