Reduviidae

Reduviidae is a family of true bugs, commonly called assassin bugs. Most species prey on other arthropods, piercing them with specialized mouthparts and sucking out their contents.

Rostrum (insect anatomy): An insect's elongated, jointed mouthpart used to pierce or probe food sources. Reduviids use this beak to pierce prey and deliver saliva.
Triatominae: A subfamily of blood-feeding reduviids that includes important vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi. These kissing bugs transmit the parasite that causes Chagas disease.
Phymata: A genus of ambush bugs with broad, grasping forelegs, found mainly on flowers. Its flower-based ambush strategy is a specialized form of reduviid predation.
Nabidae: A family of predatory true bugs known as damsel bugs, generally smaller and more slender than assassin bugs. Damsel bugs also hunt insects but belong to a separate true-bug family.
Extraoral digestion: Digestion in which an animal releases enzymes onto food and absorbs the resulting nutrients externally. Many assassin bugs liquefy prey tissues before sucking them up.
Chagas disease: A parasitic disease caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, commonly transmitted by triatomine bugs. It is the major human disease associated with a reduviid lineage.
Acanthaspis petax: An African assassin bug known for covering its body with the carcasses of its prey. Its corpse armor is an unusual form of concealment and defense.
Cimicidae: A family of wingless or short-winged blood-feeding true bugs that includes bed bugs. Bed bugs are blood-feeding relatives, not predatory assassin bugs.
Venom: A secretion delivered through a bite or sting that disrupts another organism's physiology. Some reduviids inject toxic saliva that rapidly immobilizes arthropod prey.
Trypanosoma cruzi: A protozoan parasite that causes Chagas disease in humans and other mammals. Triatomine reduviids can transmit this parasite during blood feeding.
