Refresh rate

Refresh rate is the number of times per second a display updates its image, measured in hertz. It describes display timing, not how many distinct frames a source provides.

Hertz: The SI unit of frequency, equal to one cycle per second. Refresh rate counts display updates per second in this unit.
Motion blur: The smearing or loss of sharpness perceived when an image moves or a camera exposes over time. Higher refresh rates can make moving objects easier to track, though they do not eliminate all blur.
Display resolution: The number of pixels forming a display image, usually stated as width by height. Resolution counts spatial detail; refresh rate counts updates over time.
Display device: An output device that presents visual information as light or reflected light. Refresh rate is one timing characteristic of this broader class of devices.
Frame pacing: The timing pattern at which successive video frames are delivered. Even delivery matters as much as the average rate for smooth motion.
Input lag: The delay between an input action and its visible or audible result. Shorter refresh intervals can reduce one source of display response delay.
Pixel response time: The time a display pixel takes to change from one color or intensity to another. Slow pixel transitions can cause blur independently of the refresh rate.
Raster scan: A method of displaying an image by scanning its rows in sequence. Many displays construct each update through a timed scan across the image.
Tearing (graphics): A visual artifact in which parts of multiple frames appear in one display image. It can occur when updates are unsynchronized with frame delivery.
Gaming monitor: A monitor designed for interactive play, often featuring high refresh rates and fast pixel response. High refresh rates are marketed for smoother and more responsive gameplay.
