Regency

A regency is the temporary exercise of a monarch’s powers by another person or body, usually because the monarch is a minor, absent, or incapacitated.

Regent: A person appointed to exercise a monarch’s powers temporarily. The regent is the individual who carries out the authority delegated during a regency.
Regency of George IV: The period from 1811 to 1820 when George, Prince of Wales, governed Britain for his incapacitated father, George III. It is the British period most commonly associated with the name “the Regency.”
Anne of France: A French princess who governed as regent for her younger brother Charles VIII from 1483 to 1491. Her regency became a model of effective royal government in a minority.
Interregnum: A period between the end of one sovereign’s reign and the beginning of another’s. A regency preserves an existing monarch’s reign; an interregnum occurs between reigns.
Regency council: A body of officials that exercises royal authority collectively during a monarch’s incapacity or minority. Some regencies distribute powers among several members rather than a single regent.
Regency of Philip II of France: The French regency in which Philip, Duke of Orléans, governed for the child king Louis XV from 1715 to 1723. It illustrates how a regent could wield power during a king’s childhood.
Philip II, Duke of Orléans: A French nobleman who governed as regent for Louis XV from 1715 to 1723. His political and cultural influence extended beyond the formal duties of regency.
Viceroy: A governor who rules a territory as the representative of a monarch or government. A viceroy governs a territory, while a regent exercises the monarch’s own powers.
Regency Act 1937: A United Kingdom statute establishing arrangements for a regent when the sovereign is under eighteen or incapacitated. It shows how statute can specify when a regency begins and who may serve.
Regency of Maria Christina of Austria: The regency Maria Christina exercised in Spain for her infant daughter Isabella II beginning in 1833. Her regency shows how a succession dispute could turn temporary guardianship into a political struggle.
