Regional geography

Regional geography studies and synthesizes the physical and human characteristics of particular areas. It explains how these characteristics combine to distinguish one region from another.

Region: An area distinguished by shared characteristics, connections, or boundaries. Regional geography takes the region as its central unit of study.
Regionalization: The process of dividing geographic space into regions using selected criteria. It turns chosen similarities or relationships into workable regional units.
Chorology: The study of the areal differentiation and spatial arrangement of phenomena on Earth. Its focus on areal difference helped establish geography’s regional tradition.
Systematic geography: The study of a particular geographic theme across different places. Its thematic organization contrasts with regional geography’s area-based synthesis.
World regional geography: The comparative study of the world’s major regions and their physical and human characteristics. It applies regional synthesis to broad areas such as continents and subcontinents.
Place: A location understood through its physical features and human meanings. The distinctive qualities of places contribute to a region’s character.
Regional geography (systematic geography): An approach that studies a specific geographic theme across multiple places. It organizes inquiry by theme, whereas regional geography organizes it by area.
Paul Vidal de la Blache: A French geographer associated with possibilism and the development of regional geography. His regional studies emphasized ways of life shaped through human-environment relations.
Area studies: An interdisciplinary study of a world region, often emphasizing its languages, histories, and societies. It overlaps with regional geography but draws more explicitly on nongeographic disciplines.
Regional development: The economic and social change of regions, including differences in opportunity and well-being. Regional profiles help explain uneven development and inform policy responses.
