Regional power

A state with substantial influence over the political, economic, or security affairs of its geographic region. Its reach is significant within that region but generally does not match that of a global power.

Balance of power: A condition in which states’ capabilities are distributed so that no state can dominate the others. Regional powers build, exploit, or disrupt local balances to protect their position.
Great power: A state with substantial capabilities and influence in international affairs, often beyond its immediate region. Great powers have broader reach, while regional powers are principally influential in a particular region.
Brazil: The largest country in South America by area and population, with a major regional economy. Brazil’s diplomacy and economic weight make it a frequent case of South American regional influence.
Regionalism: Political cooperation and institution-building among states in a shared geographic region. Regional powers can sponsor cooperation while steering its rules and priorities.
Power (international relations): The ability of actors in international politics to shape outcomes, choices, or rules. Assessments of regional standing depend on which forms of power count and how they are measured.
Sphere of influence: A geographic area where a powerful state exercises significant political or strategic influence without formal sovereignty. A regional power may seek privileged influence over neighboring states.
Superpower: A state with exceptional global military, economic, and political reach. The term marks a much higher level of global reach than regional power.
South Africa: A country at Africa’s southern tip with substantial economic and diplomatic weight on the continent. Its participation in African institutions illustrates influence exercised through regional diplomacy.
Regional security: The condition and management of threats affecting states within a geographic region. A regional power’s choices can stabilize local security or intensify competition.
Soft power: The ability to influence others through attraction and persuasion rather than coercion or payment. Cultural appeal and perceived legitimacy can strengthen influence beyond material capabilities.
