Regionalism (American art)

An American art movement that depicted rural life, local identity, and social conditions, especially during the 1930s. Its artists often rejected European modernism in favor of recognizable scenes and subjects.

Thomas Hart Benton: An American painter and muralist whose energetic scenes of Midwestern life became central to Regionalism. His sweeping compositions made labor, music, and everyday life in the Midwest emblematic subjects.
American Gothic: A 1930 painting by Grant Wood showing a farmer and a woman standing before a Gothic Revival house. Its precise, enigmatic portrait became the movement’s most recognizable work.

The Social History of Missouri: A series of murals by Thomas Hart Benton installed in the Missouri State Capitol in 1936. The murals translate Regionalism’s attention to local history into a large-scale public commission.
Ashcan School: An early twentieth-century American art movement that portrayed urban working-class life in direct, realist styles. Its earlier commitment to depicting everyday American life offered a precedent, though Regionalism favored rural subjects.
