Rehabilitation in the Soviet Union

Rehabilitation in the Soviet Union was the post-Stalin process of overturning convictions and restoring the names of people unjustly repressed by the state.

De-Stalinization: Nikita Khrushchev’s campaign to repudiate Joseph Stalin’s rule and loosen some of its political controls. The campaign created the political opening for reviewing Stalin-era convictions.
Gulag: The Soviet system of forced-labor camps and associated prisons, colonies, and transit sites. Many rehabilitated people had been imprisoned or sent to labor camps.
Nikolai Bukharin: A Bolshevik revolutionary and Soviet political leader executed after conviction in the 1938 Moscow show trial. His 1988 rehabilitation became a prominent late-Soviet reversal of a show-trial verdict.
Amnesty: A governmental act that removes or reduces legal penalties for a group without necessarily declaring them innocent. Rehabilitation asserted wrongful conviction; amnesty could release people without clearing their names.
