Blocking (stage) : The planned movement and positioning of performers on a stage. Blocking gives performers repeatable stage movements that can be tested and refined in rehearsal.
Improvisation : The creation of material in the moment without a fully predetermined plan. Improvisation can generate material that performers later shape through rehearsal.
Orchestra rehearsal : A practice session in which an orchestra prepares a musical work for performance. It coordinates instrumental sections, interpretation, and responses to a conductor.
Performance : The presentation or execution of artistic work before an audience or in another intended setting. A performance presents the work; rehearsal prepares and adjusts it beforehand.
Cue (theatre) : A signal that prompts an action, line, sound, lighting change, or other theatrical event. Rehearsal establishes when performers and technicians respond to each cue.
Memorization : The process of learning information so it can be recalled without external prompts. Learning lines, music, or movement frees attention for interpretation and coordination.
Dance rehearsal : A practice session in which dancers learn, refine, and coordinate choreography. It develops movement precision, spacing, and synchronization across a cast.
Run-through : A continuous practice execution of a work, usually with minimal interruption. A run-through is one rehearsal method, unlike sessions devoted to stopping and correcting details.
Table read : A group reading of a script, usually seated, that lets performers hear its dialogue and structure. A table read is an early rehearsal format focused on the script rather than staging.
Ensemble (theatre) : A group of performers who work collectively to create a theatrical performance. Rehearsal builds the shared timing and responsiveness an ensemble depends on.
