Reintroduction biology

Reintroduction biology studies and guides the release of organisms into parts of their former or intended range. It combines ecological research, release planning, and long-term monitoring.

Reintroduction: The deliberate release of organisms into areas where they once occurred or are intended to occur. This is the central intervention whose design and outcomes the discipline studies.
Population viability analysis: A quantitative method for estimating a population’s extinction risk under specified conditions. It helps estimate whether a target population can persist after releases end.
California condor recovery program: A conservation program that bred California condors in captivity and released them into the wild after their population collapsed. It demonstrates how captive breeding, releases, and continuing management can support recovery.
Species reintroduction: The deliberate return of a species to a part of its indigenous range from which it has disappeared. It is narrower than the field, which also studies releases into intended ranges.
Translocation: The human-mediated movement of living organisms from one location to another. Reintroductions are one purpose-specific form of moving organisms between locations.
Minimum viable population: The smallest population size estimated to have a specified probability of persistence over a given period. Release targets often depend on the numbers needed to reduce extinction risk.
Arabian oryx reintroduction: The restoration of Arabian oryx populations through captive breeding and releases into parts of their former range. It is a landmark case of rebuilding a wild population after extinction in the wild.
Reinforcement biology: The addition of individuals to an existing population to increase its size or genetic diversity. Unlike reintroduction, reinforcement supplements a population already present at the site.
Soft release: A release method that holds organisms temporarily at the release site and supports their adjustment before full freedom. Temporary acclimation can reduce dispersal and improve adjustment after release.
Genetic diversity: Variation in genetic composition among individuals within a population or species. Founder choice affects the variation and adaptive potential of a reintroduced population.
