Relativistic chemistry

Relativistic chemistry studies how special relativity changes the electronic structure, bonding, and properties of atoms and molecules, especially those containing heavy elements.

Scalar relativistic effects: Relativistic corrections that change electron motion and orbital energies without depending on spin. They contract and stabilize heavy atoms’ s and p orbitals, shifting bonding and chemical properties.
Gold: A chemical element with atomic number 79, known for its yellow color and resistance to corrosion. Relativistic shifts in its electronic structure help explain gold’s color and chemical behavior.
Paul A. M. Dirac: A British theoretical physicist who formulated the relativistic wave equation for the electron. His equation established the quantum-relativistic framework underlying modern treatments of heavy atoms.
Nonrelativistic quantum mechanics: Quantum mechanics formulated without corrections for motion near the speed of light. It provides the baseline against which relativistic changes in atomic and molecular properties are measured.
Spin–orbit coupling: An interaction between an electron’s spin and its orbital motion around a nucleus. It splits heavy-atom electronic states and can alter molecular spectra and reactivity.
Mercury: A metallic chemical element with atomic number 80 that is liquid at ordinary room temperature. Relativistic stabilization of its 6s electrons contributes to weak metallic bonding and its low melting point.
Walter Kohn: An Austrian-born American physicist who developed density functional theory with Pierre Hohenberg. Density functional theory became a practical platform for calculating relativistic molecular properties.
Schrödinger equation: A nonrelativistic equation that describes how quantum-mechanical wavefunctions evolve. Its ordinary electronic solutions omit effects captured by relativistic treatments.
Dirac equation: A relativistic quantum equation describing spin-½ particles such as electrons. It provides a foundational description of electrons when nonrelativistic quantum mechanics is insufficient.
Lead–acid battery: A rechargeable battery that uses lead electrodes and sulfuric acid electrolyte. Relativistic effects influence lead’s electronic structure and help explain the battery’s unusually high voltage.
