Relativistic effect

A change in atomic structure caused by electrons moving fast enough that relativistic physics matters. It alters orbital energies and shapes, influencing the properties of heavy atoms and their compounds.

Dirac equation: A relativistic quantum equation describing spin-½ particles, including electrons. It provides the framework for calculating relativistic electron states in atoms.
Gold: A chemical element with atomic number 79 and symbol Au. Relativistic shifts in its electronic transitions help give bulk gold its yellow color.
Atomic orbital: A quantum state describing an electron’s spatial distribution in an atom. Relativistic effects change the energies and spatial distributions of atomic orbitals.
Nonrelativistic quantum mechanics: Quantum mechanics formulated without corrections for motion near the speed of light. It misses systematic orbital changes that become significant for heavy atoms.
Spin–orbit interaction: An interaction coupling a particle’s spin with its orbital motion. Relativistic coupling between electron motion and spin splits atomic energy levels.
Mercury (element): A metallic chemical element with atomic number 80 and symbol Hg, liquid near room temperature. Relativistic stabilization of its filled 6s shell weakens metallic bonding and contributes to its low melting point.
Atomic number: The number of protons in an atomic nucleus, defining a chemical element. Larger nuclear charge draws inner electrons faster, making relativistic effects stronger in heavy atoms.
Born–Oppenheimer approximation: An approximation that separates electronic and nuclear motion in molecular calculations. It addresses nuclear–electron motion separation, not relativistic changes in electron structure.
Mass–velocity correction: A relativistic correction to electron kinetic energy that increases with momentum. It contracts and stabilizes orbitals with substantial electron density near the nucleus.
Lead–acid battery: A rechargeable battery that stores energy through reversible reactions involving lead, lead dioxide, and sulfuric acid. Relativistic effects influence lead’s electronic structure and the battery’s unusually high cell voltage.
