Relief sculpture

Sculpture in which forms project from a supporting background surface. Its figures remain attached to that surface, unlike fully freestanding sculpture.

Bas-relief: Relief sculpture in which figures project only slightly from the background. Its shallow projection is the defining low-relief form.
Carving: A subtractive process that removes material to shape a solid object. Carving cuts figures and depth directly into a relief's material.
Parthenon frieze: A continuous sculpted frieze that once ran around the inner colonnade of the Parthenon in Athens. It is a major classical example of narrative figures in relief.
Frieze: A horizontal decorative band, often placed along the upper part of a wall or building. Relief sculpture commonly forms the imagery of architectural friezes.
High relief: Relief sculpture in which figures project prominently from the background, sometimes nearly detaching from it. It shows the opposite end of relief's projection range from bas-relief.
Modeling (sculpture): A sculptural process that shapes pliable material by adding, removing, or rearranging it. Modeling builds projecting forms before they are fired or cast.
Ishtar Gate: A monumental glazed-brick gateway built in Babylon under Nebuchadnezzar II. Its molded animal reliefs turn an architectural gateway into a royal image.
Tympanum (architecture): The semicircular or triangular space above a doorway, often framed by an arch or lintel. Medieval and classical buildings often fill this architectural field with relief scenes.
Sunken relief: Relief sculpture in which outlines are cut into a surface and forms remain below its original plane. It reverses the usual projection by carving forms into the background.
Casting: A process that forms an object by pouring or pressing material into a mold. Casting reproduces relief designs in durable materials such as bronze.
