Religious authority

Religious authority is the recognized right or capacity to interpret religious teachings and guide religious practice. It may rest on office, scripture, tradition, expertise, charisma, or communal recognition.

Sacred scripture: Texts regarded by a religious community as sacred or divinely authoritative. Scripture can provide the standard religious authorities interpret and apply.
Magisterium: The teaching authority exercised by the Catholic Church, especially its bishops in communion with the pope. Catholicism assigns a defined institutional role to authoritative interpretation.
Council of Nicaea: A Christian council convened by Emperor Constantine in 325 to address disputes including Arianism. Its creed and decisions illustrate early efforts to settle doctrine through collective authority.
Religious law: Rules and legal traditions grounded in religious teachings and institutions. Religious authorities interpret rules that govern worship, conduct, and communal obligations.
Schism: A formal division within a religious community over doctrine, leadership, or practice. Disputes over legitimate authority can divide communities into rival institutions.
Religious tradition: Beliefs and practices transmitted across generations within a religious community. Inherited interpretation and custom can authorize guidance alongside written texts.
Sola scriptura: The Protestant principle that Scripture is the sole infallible authority for Christian doctrine. It limits the final authority of church traditions and institutions in doctrinal disputes.
Gregorian Reform: An eleventh-century movement to reform the Western Church and strengthen papal authority. It reshaped the boundary between ecclesiastical and secular claims to power.
Fatwa: A nonbinding Islamic legal opinion issued by a qualified scholar in response to a question. A fatwa shows how scholarly authority addresses specific questions of practice.
Religious reform: A movement to change religious beliefs, institutions, or practices while engaging with an existing tradition. Reformers challenge established authorities while proposing new grounds for religious legitimacy.
