Religious nationalism

Religious nationalism links a nation’s identity and political sovereignty to a religion. It often supports a privileged public or governmental role for that religion.

Nationalism: A political ideology that treats the nation as a central basis for identity and self-government. Religious nationalism joins national self-rule to religious identity.
Hindu nationalism: A political movement that seeks to define India’s national identity primarily through Hindu culture and heritage. It makes Hindu identity a central basis for Indian nationhood.
Westphalian sovereignty: The principle that states exercise authority within territorial borders without external political subordination. Modern sovereignty created a framework in which religious identity could be tied to territorial statehood.
Majoritarianism: A political principle or practice that gives the majority’s preferences decisive authority. A religious majority may claim that its faith should define national public life.
National identity: A shared sense of belonging to a nation, shaped by history, culture, language, or civic ties. Religious markers can define who counts as part of the nation.
Christian nationalism: A political ideology that identifies a nation as fundamentally Christian and seeks to shape public life accordingly. It frames national identity and political legitimacy through Christianity.
Peace of Augsburg: A 1555 settlement allowing rulers in the Holy Roman Empire to choose between Catholicism and Lutheranism for their territories. Its principle of ruler-selected religion linked political territory and religious affiliation.
Secularism: A principle organizing political institutions independently of religious authority or official religious preference. It offers competing rules for the relationship between government and religion.
Political theology: The study of how theological ideas relate to political authority, institutions, and order. It supplies concepts for linking sacred authority with state power.
Jewish nationalism: National movements that seek Jewish self-determination, especially Zionism and its political expressions. It shows how religious and national identities can intersect without being identical.
