Religious socialism

Religious socialism combines religious teachings and communities with commitments to economic equality, collective responsibility, and social justice. It includes distinct movements shaped by different faiths and political settings.

Christian socialism: A movement that draws on Christian teachings to support social ownership, economic equality, and workers’ rights. It became the most influential historical branch of religious socialism in Europe.
Socialism: A family of political traditions advocating social or collective control of economic resources and greater equality. Religious socialism adapts socialist commitments to religious ethics and institutions.
Mondragon Corporation: A federation of worker cooperatives founded in the Basque Country in 1956. Its cooperative model grew from Catholic social thought and local community organizing.
Marxism: A political and economic theory that analyzes class conflict and advocates replacing capitalism with collective ownership. Religious socialists may share its critique of inequality while rejecting materialism or revolutionary atheism.
Charles Kingsley: An English clergyman and writer who promoted Christian social reform in the nineteenth century. His advocacy helped popularize Christian socialism in Victorian Britain.
Economic equality: A condition in which wealth, income, or economic opportunity is distributed more equally across a society. It is a central goal that religious socialists often ground in moral obligations.
Worker cooperative: A business owned and democratically governed by its workers. Cooperative ownership can translate shared responsibility into workplace governance.
Secularism: The principle that religious institutions and authorities should not control public institutions or government. Religious socialism makes faith communities sources of political ethics rather than separating them from social action.
Friedrich Naumann: A German Protestant pastor and liberal politician who developed a social reform program influenced by Christianity. His National Social Association linked Protestant ethics with labor reform and democratic politics.
Collective ownership: Ownership of productive assets by a community, cooperative, public body, or other collective. It is one possible institutional expression of religious socialist commitments.
