Rembrandt

Rembrandt van Rijn (1606–1669) was a Dutch painter and etcher known for expressive portraits, biblical scenes, and dramatic contrasts of light and shadow.

The Night Watch: Rembrandt’s 1642 group portrait of Amsterdam’s civic militia, formally titled The Militia Company of District II under the Command of Captain Frans Banninck Cocq. Its staged motion and concentrated light make it his most famous large-scale civic commission.
Chiaroscuro: The use of strong contrasts between light and dark to model form and direct attention. Rembrandt used concentrated illumination to organize crowded scenes and reveal expressions.
Leiden: A historic Dutch city in South Holland, known for its university and textile industry. Rembrandt trained and began his career there before moving to Amsterdam.
