René Caillié

René Caillié was a French explorer who reached Timbuktu in 1828 and returned to Europe alive, becoming the first European known to do so.

Deux-Sèvres: A department in western France, created during the French Revolution. Caillié was born in Deux-Sèvres in 1799.
Arabic language: A Semitic language spoken across the Middle East and North Africa, with many regional varieties. Caillié learned Arabic to communicate during his journey through Muslim West Africa.
Journey to Timbuktu (1827–1828): René Caillié’s overland expedition from West Africa to Timbuktu and back to the Atlantic coast. This is the expedition that established his claim to reaching and returning from the city.
European exploration of Africa: The voyages and expeditions by Europeans into and across Africa, especially from the fifteenth through nineteenth centuries. Caillié’s journey became a landmark in nineteenth-century European exploration.
Timbuktu: A historic city in Mali, once a major center of trans-Saharan trade and Islamic scholarship. The city was the central destination of Caillié’s expedition.
Hajj: The annual Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca, required of Muslims who are able to perform it. Caillié presented himself as a Muslim returning from pilgrimage to explain his travels.
Timbuktu Manuscripts: A large collection of Arabic and African-language manuscripts preserved in and around Timbuktu. Caillié’s descriptions contributed to European knowledge of the city’s scholarly life.
Alexander Gordon Laing: A Scottish explorer who reached Timbuktu in 1826 and was killed before returning to Europe. Laing arrived before Caillié, but Caillié’s safe return made his achievement distinct.
Mungo Park: A Scottish explorer whose journeys along the Niger River ended in his death in 1806. Park’s fatal expedition shaped European interest in the region Caillié later crossed.
Sahara: The vast desert spanning much of North Africa. Crossing the Sahara was a major challenge on the route to and from Timbuktu.
