René Descartes

René Descartes (1596–1650) was a French philosopher, mathematician, and natural philosopher whose work helped establish analytic geometry and modern rationalist philosophy.

Rationalism: A philosophical tradition that treats reason as a primary source of knowledge. Descartes is a central early modern rationalist, grounding knowledge in reason rather than sensory experience alone.
Meditations on First Philosophy: Descartes’s 1641 philosophical work presenting arguments about knowledge, God, and the distinction between mind and body. Its six meditations develop the central stages of his metaphysical inquiry.
La Flèche: A Jesuit collège in France where Descartes studied from 1607 to 1614. His education there exposed him to scholastic philosophy and mathematics he later reassessed.
Princess Elisabeth of Bohemia: A philosopher and correspondent whose letters challenged Descartes on the interaction of mind and body. Her questions pressed him to explain how an immaterial mind could affect a physical body.
Cartesianism: A family of philosophical and scientific approaches inspired by Descartes’s methods and doctrines. The term names the traditions that developed, defended, or revised his thought.
Methodic doubt: A procedure of withholding assent from beliefs that could be doubted to identify secure foundations for knowledge. Descartes uses systematic doubt to seek beliefs that survive even radical skeptical challenges.
Evil demon: A hypothetical deceiver imagined as capable of making a thinker mistaken about even basic beliefs. Descartes uses this extreme skeptical scenario to test whether any belief is indubitable.
Isaac Beeckman: A Dutch mathematician and natural philosopher who encouraged mathematical approaches to physical problems. Beeckman’s influence helped direct Descartes toward mathematical physics in his early years.
Pierre Gassendi: A French philosopher and scientist who defended empiricism and revived ancient atomism. His objections to the Meditations challenged Descartes’s claims about innate ideas and certainty.
Cartesian coordinate system: A system locating points with ordered numerical coordinates relative to perpendicular axes. The coordinate framework associated with Descartes transformed geometry and enabled mathematical descriptions of motion.
