René Just Haüy

René Just Haüy (1743–1822) was a French mineralogist who developed an influential theory that crystals are built from regularly arranged, repeating units.

Crystal: A solid whose atoms or molecules form an ordered structure that repeats through space. The ordered internal structure Haüy sought to explain distinguishes crystals from irregular solids.
Primitive form (crystallography): A simple geometric form from which Haüy proposed a crystal’s observed shape could be derived. Haüy treated primitive forms as the basis for explaining more elaborate crystal shapes.
Abbé Nicaise Desmarest: A French geologist and naturalist who encouraged Haüy’s early interest in mineralogy. Desmarest helped direct Haüy toward the study of minerals and their forms.
