Repeating firearm

A firearm that holds multiple cartridges and can fire successive shots without reloading after each shot.

Firearm action: The mechanism that loads, fires, extracts, and ejects cartridges in a firearm. Repeating firearms are distinguished by how their actions cycle between shots.
Cartridge (firearms): A packaged ammunition unit containing a projectile, propellant, primer, and case. A repeating firearm stores and fires multiple cartridges in succession.
Muzzleloader: A firearm loaded through the muzzle by inserting powder and projectile into the barrel. It generally requires loading after each shot, unlike a repeating firearm.
Rifle: A shoulder-fired firearm with spiral grooves in its barrel that impart spin to a projectile. Many repeating firearms are rifles designed for accurate, aimed fire.
Single-shot firearm: A firearm that holds one cartridge and must be reloaded after each shot. It is the direct opposite of a repeating firearm's successive-shot capacity.
Bolt-action firearm: A firearm whose manually operated bolt chambers and extracts cartridges. Its bolt cycles the chamber while a magazine holds additional cartridges.
Magazine (firearms): A device that stores cartridges and feeds them into a firearm's chamber. The magazine supplies cartridges for successive shots.
Colt Paterson: A revolver designed by Samuel Colt and produced beginning in 1836. It helped establish the practical use of multiple preloaded chambers for successive shots.
Shotgun: A shoulder-fired firearm typically designed to fire a shotshell through a smoothbore barrel. Repeating actions are widely used in shotguns as well as rifles.
Machine gun: A firearm that fires continuously while its trigger is held and ammunition remains available. Unlike ordinary repeaters, it can fire multiple shots from a single trigger actuation.
