Republican faction

A political grouping that supports a republic or advances republican interests within a larger political organization. Its meaning depends on the political setting and the principles grouped under republicanism.

Roman Republic: An ancient state in which elected magistrates and the Senate governed Rome for much of its history. Its conflicts between populares and optimates supplied an early model of political factions within a republic.
Republicanism: A political tradition favoring government as a public matter, often grounded in popular sovereignty and opposition to monarchy. It supplies the broad principles that republican factions claim to defend.
James Madison: An American political thinker and statesman who helped draft the Constitution and served as the fourth U.S. president. He analyzed faction and argued that an extended republic could limit its harmful effects.
Federalist Party: An early American political party that favored a stronger national government and commercial development. It opposed the Jeffersonian Republican coalition in the first U.S. party system.
Federalist No. 10: An essay by James Madison arguing that a large republic can control the effects of faction through representation and competing interests. It is a foundational argument about managing factions without suppressing political liberty.
Populares: Roman politicians who sought popular support and used assemblies and tribunes to pursue political aims. They formed one side of elite factional struggles during the late Roman Republic.
Republic: A state whose political authority is not held as a hereditary monarchy and is exercised through public institutions. A faction is republican when it supports this form of political order or its interests.
Thomas Jefferson: An American statesman who drafted the Declaration of Independence and served as the third U.S. president. His supporters organized an influential early U.S. republican coalition opposed to Federalist policies.
Monarchism: A political doctrine supporting monarchy as a form of government. Republican factions reject hereditary monarchy or seek to limit its authority.
Party system: The pattern of competition and cooperation among political parties within a political system. Republican factions can consolidate into parties and reshape the structure of political competition.
