Republican Party

A major United States political party founded in 1854, traditionally associated with conservatism and represented by an elephant. Its platform and voter coalition have changed substantially over time.

Kansas–Nebraska Act: An 1854 law that organized Kansas and Nebraska territories and allowed settlers to decide whether to permit slavery. Its repeal of the Missouri Compromise helped trigger the party’s formation.
National Republican Convention: A quadrennial gathering where Republican delegates nominate presidential and vice-presidential candidates and adopt a platform. It formalizes the party’s presidential choices and stated priorities.

Free Soil Party: A political party active from 1848 to 1854 that opposed the expansion of slavery into western territories. Its antislavery voters and organizers joined the emerging Republican coalition.
Republican National Committee: The central committee responsible for coordinating the Republican Party’s national organization and election efforts. It manages national party operations between presidential conventions.
Theodore Roosevelt: The 26th U.S. president, known for trust regulation, conservation, and an assertive foreign policy. His progressive Republicanism challenged corporate power and party orthodoxy.
Radical Republicans: A faction of congressional Republicans during the Civil War and Reconstruction that sought emancipation and broad rights for formerly enslaved people. Their agenda shows how forcefully the party once pursued federal protection of Black citizenship.
Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution: The 1865 constitutional amendment that abolished slavery in the United States, except as punishment for crime. Republican lawmakers helped secure its passage after the Civil War.
