Réseau express régional

The Réseau express régional (RER) is a rapid-transit and commuter-rail network serving Paris and its surrounding region, operated jointly by RATP and SNCF.

RER A: The busiest RER line, connecting western and eastern suburbs through central Paris. Its high-frequency, cross-city service illustrates how the network links distant suburban branches.
Paris Métro: Paris’s urban rapid-transit system, composed mainly of short, frequent lines within the city and nearby suburbs. It complements the RER with denser station spacing and more local journeys.
Paul Delouvrier: A French civil servant who led major postwar planning for the development of the Paris region. His regional planning helped establish the framework for building the RER.
Charles de Gaulle Airport: France’s largest international airport, northeast of Paris. RER B provides a direct rail connection between the airport and central Paris.
Paris Métropole: The continuous metropolitan area centered on Paris and extending across surrounding suburbs. The RER supports daily movement across this metropolitan region.
RER B: An RER line running from Charles de Gaulle Airport and northern suburbs through Paris to the south. It shares central infrastructure with RER A and serves both airports and the city.
Transilien: The SNCF-branded network of suburban trains serving Paris and the Île-de-France region. It serves many of the same suburbs but generally terminates at major Paris stations.
Réseau express régional d'Île-de-France: The broader regional express rail system serving the Île-de-France region around Paris. The Paris RER is the central part of this wider regional network.
Orly Airport: Paris’s second-largest airport, south of the city. RER B connects to Orly through the Orlyval airport shuttle.
Transit-oriented development: Urban development that concentrates housing and activities around high-capacity public transport. RER stations have supported dense suburban centers and new towns.
