Residential schools in Canada

Government-funded, church-operated institutions that separated Indigenous children from their families and communities to assimilate them into Euro-Canadian society. They operated from the nineteenth century into the late twentieth century.

Indian Act: Canadian federal legislation governing many aspects of Indigenous life, land, and governance. It supplied legal powers and policies used to administer the residential school system.
Canadian colonialism: The extension of European and Canadian political control over Indigenous lands and peoples. Residential schools grew within a broader project of colonial control in Canada.
Peter Henderson Bryce: A Canadian physician and public health official who documented high mortality among Indigenous children in schools. His reports exposed unsafe conditions and government neglect.
Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement: A 2007 legal settlement between Canada, churches, former students, and Indigenous organizations concerning residential schools. It created compensation and healing measures, including the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
Compulsory attendance: A legal requirement that children attend school, enforced through state authority. Attendance laws enabled officials to remove children who did not attend designated schools.
New France: A French colonial territory in North America that existed from the sixteenth century until 1763. Missionary schooling of Indigenous children in New France preceded the later national system.
Shingwauk Residential Schools Centre: An archival and research centre at Algoma University focused on the history and legacy of residential schools. It preserves records and supports survivor-led research on the schools.
Missing children and unmarked burials: Children who died at residential schools and burial sites that were not adequately recorded or marked. Their deaths and burial locations remain central to family searches and public accountability.
Assimilation: The process by which a group is pressured or compelled to adopt another group’s culture and identity. Residential schools were institutions of state-directed assimilation targeting Indigenous peoples.
Egerton Ryerson: A nineteenth-century Canadian educator and Methodist minister who advised on education for Indigenous peoples. His 1847 report proposed church-run boarding schools as a model for Indigenous education.
