Knowra Resource depletion Resource depletion Resource depletion is the reduction of available natural resources through extraction or use. It can affect renewable resources when use exceeds regeneration and nonrenewable resources as finite stocks are consumed.
Resource extraction : The removal of natural materials from the environment for human use. Extraction directly lowers the quantity of a resource remaining in its source.
Biodiversity loss : The decline or disappearance of biological diversity within a species, ecosystem, or region. Resource extraction can destroy habitats and reduce populations, contributing to biodiversity loss.
Deforestation : The conversion or removal of forest cover, often for agriculture, logging, or development. Forest loss makes depletion visible through changes in land cover and timber stocks.
Resource scarcity : A condition in which available resources are insufficient to meet demand at prevailing conditions. Scarcity concerns supply relative to demand; depletion specifically describes a decline in the resource stock.
Renewable resource : A natural resource replenished on timescales relevant to human use. Renewable stocks can still decline when harvesting exceeds their rate of renewal.
Desertification : The degradation of dryland ecosystems into less productive conditions through climatic and human pressures. Overuse of vegetation, soil, or water can intensify land degradation in dry regions.
Overfishing : Fishing at a rate that causes fish populations to decline faster than they can replenish. Fisheries track depletion through catch rates, stock assessments, and population recovery.
Sustainable development : Development that meets present needs without undermining future generations’ ability to meet theirs. It sets an intergenerational standard for responding to resource use and depletion.
Nonrenewable resource : A natural resource formed too slowly to be replenished on human timescales. Use of nonrenewable stocks diminishes a finite supply rather than drawing on rapid regeneration.
Resource curse : The tendency for resource-rich countries to experience weaker economic or institutional outcomes than expected. Resource dependence can turn extraction gains into economic and political vulnerabilities.
