Resurrection of the dead

The belief that the dead will return to life, usually through divine action at a future time. Traditions differ on who is raised, when it happens, and what form restored life takes.

Afterlife: Existence or experience believed to continue after bodily death. Resurrection is one account of life beyond death, but makes return to embodied life central.
Reincarnation: The belief that a being is born again in another body after death. It describes renewed life through another birth rather than the raising of the dead.
Resurrection of Jesus: The Christian belief that Jesus rose bodily from the dead after his crucifixion. It is the central Christian instance and the basis for hope in believers' future resurrection.
Book of Daniel: A biblical book containing apocalyptic visions and narratives, traditionally associated with Daniel. Daniel 12 offers one of the Hebrew Bible's clearest statements about the dead awakening.
Problem of evil: The challenge of reconciling evil and suffering with the existence of an all-powerful, all-knowing, and wholly good deity. Future resurrection can be understood as a promise that death and injustice will not have the final word.
Eschatology: Religious teachings about the ultimate destiny of humanity and the world. Resurrection commonly belongs to the expected final events of history.
Immortality of the soul: The belief that the soul continues to exist indefinitely after bodily death. It locates survival in the soul, while resurrection traditions often affirm renewed embodied life.
Jewish eschatology: Jewish teachings and expectations concerning the end of history and the world's ultimate destiny. Jewish traditions developed influential accounts of the dead being raised at the end of days.
Second Temple Judaism: The diverse forms of Jewish religion practiced during the Second Temple period, from 516 BCE to 70 CE. Resurrection hope took distinct forms amid this period's Jewish debates about justice and the afterlife.
Theodicy: An attempt to explain how evil and suffering can coexist with a good and powerful God. Resurrection may figure in explanations that expect ultimate restoration or justice beyond earthly life.
