Resuscitation

Resuscitation is emergency intervention to restore or support breathing and circulation when vital functions are failing or have stopped. It includes techniques ranging from basic first aid to advanced medical care.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation: A sequence of chest compressions and rescue breaths used when a person has no normal breathing and circulation is absent or inadequate. It manually supports circulation and ventilation during cardiac arrest.
Cardiac arrest: The sudden loss of effective heart function, causing blood circulation to stop. Resuscitation is commonly initiated to reverse this life-threatening state.
Basic life support: Initial emergency care centered on recognizing cardiac arrest, activating help, and providing CPR and defibrillation. It describes the first response before or without advanced medical interventions.
Do not resuscitate: A medical order directing clinicians not to attempt cardiopulmonary resuscitation if a person's heart or breathing stops. It limits CPR attempts while leaving other appropriate care unaffected.
Defibrillation: Delivery of an electrical shock to terminate certain abnormal heart rhythms and allow an organized rhythm to resume. It can stop shockable rhythms that prevent the heart from circulating blood.
Respiratory arrest: The cessation of effective breathing, which can lead rapidly to cardiac arrest. Restoring ventilation may be the first priority when breathing stops.
Advanced cardiac life support: A set of advanced interventions for cardiac arrest and other cardiovascular emergencies, including drugs and airway procedures. It extends basic resuscitation with clinical monitoring and advanced treatment.
Palliative care: Care that relieves suffering and supports quality of life during serious illness. Its goals can differ from attempts to reverse an acute, life-threatening collapse.
Airway management: Techniques for keeping an airway open and enabling air to reach the lungs. An open airway is necessary for oxygenation during resuscitation.
Hypoxia: Insufficient oxygen availability to tissues, impairing their normal function. Resuscitation aims to limit or reverse tissue oxygen deprivation.
