Reticulocyte

A newly released red blood cell that still contains residual ribosomal RNA. Its abundance in blood indicates how actively bone marrow is replacing red cells.

Erythropoiesis: The process by which hematopoietic stem cells develop into red blood cells. Reticulocytes are the final stage of erythropoiesis before mature red cells.
Reticulocyte count: A laboratory measurement of the number or proportion of reticulocytes in blood. It quantifies the circulating immature cells whose abundance reflects marrow output.
Erythroblast: An immature red-cell precursor in bone marrow that develops into a reticulocyte. Erythroblasts expel their nuclei before becoming reticulocytes.
Iron-deficiency anemia: Anemia caused by insufficient iron for normal hemoglobin production. Iron deficiency limits effective red-cell production and can blunt the reticulocyte response.
Nucleated red blood cell: An immature red-cell precursor that still contains a nucleus and appears in peripheral blood in some conditions. Reticulocytes lack nuclei, distinguishing them from these earlier circulating precursors.
Reticulocyte maturation: The transition in which a reticulocyte loses residual RNA and organelles to become a mature red blood cell. This process defines the change measured when reticulocytes leave the bloodstream’s immature-cell pool.
Corrected reticulocyte count: A reticulocyte percentage adjusted for the reduced red-cell concentration in anemia. It prevents anemia from making the unadjusted percentage appear misleadingly high.
Enucleation: The removal of a cell’s nucleus during development or specialized cellular processes. A reticulocyte has already expelled its nucleus but retains RNA in its cytoplasm.
Vitamin B12 deficiency: A deficiency that impairs DNA synthesis and can cause megaloblastic anemia. Treatment can trigger a marked reticulocyte rise as effective red-cell production resumes.
Polychromasia: A bluish-gray appearance of young red blood cells on a stained blood smear. Polychromasia can signal reticulocytes, but it is a visual finding rather than a cell count.
