Revolution of Dignity

A wave of protests and political upheaval in Ukraine from 2013 to 2014 that ousted President Viktor Yanukovych and reshaped the country’s politics.

Euromaidan: The 2013–2014 Ukrainian protest movement centered on Kyiv’s Maidan Nezalezhnosti. The protest movement’s name is often used for the wider upheaval and its mobilization.
Ukraine–European Union Association Agreement: A proposed agreement to deepen political association and economic integration between Ukraine and the European Union. Yanukovych’s suspension of preparations to sign it triggered the first major protests.
Petro Poroshenko: Ukrainian businessman and politician who served as president from 2014 to 2019. He became president after the upheaval and represented its post-Yanukovych political order.
Annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation: Russia’s 2014 seizure and incorporation of Crimea, which Ukraine and most states regard as illegal. The change of power in Kyiv preceded Russia’s occupation and annexation of the peninsula.
Anti-Maidan: A label for protests and political currents opposing the Euromaidan movement in Ukraine. Its supporters rejected the movement’s aims and challenged its claim to represent Ukraine.
Maidan Nezalezhnosti: A central square in Kyiv that became the main site of the 2013–2014 protests. The square was the movement’s physical center and a site of major clashes.
Viktor Yanukovych: Ukrainian politician who served as president from 2010 until his removal in 2014. His decision to suspend the EU agreement and the government’s response drove the crisis.
Yulia Tymoshenko: Ukrainian politician who served as prime minister and was imprisoned under Yanukovych. Her release during the uprising made her a prominent figure in the transition.
War in Donbas: An armed conflict in eastern Ukraine beginning in 2014 between Ukrainian forces and Russia-backed separatists. The upheaval was followed by armed conflict in eastern regions of Ukraine.
Revolution: A rapid, fundamental change in a country’s political order or social structure. The concept frames the upheaval as a transformation rather than only a protest campaign.
