RGB color spaces

RGB color spaces represent colors with red, green, and blue coordinates defined by specific primaries, a white point, and a transfer function. These definitions make RGB values interpretable as colors.

Color primaries: The chromaticities assigned to the red, green, and blue channels of a color space. Their chromaticities set the colors that the RGB channels can combine.
sRGB: A standard RGB color space designed for common computer displays and the web. Its defined primaries and transfer function make it a common default for images.
Device-independent color: Color represented independently of the characteristics of a particular display or printer. RGB values depend on defined color-space conventions, while device-independent values target consistent interpretation.
CIE 1931 color space: A colorimetric system that represents human color matching with tristimulus values and chromaticity coordinates. It provides a common reference for specifying RGB primaries and converting color coordinates.
Color clipping: The loss of color detail when values exceed a representable range and are constrained to its boundary. Converting into a narrower RGB gamut can clip colors outside its limits.
White point: The chromaticity designated as neutral white in a color space or imaging system. It establishes which RGB mixture is interpreted as neutral white.
Adobe RGB color space: An RGB color space with a wider gamut than sRGB, especially in cyan-green regions. It supports a broader range of colors in print-oriented imaging workflows.
CMYK color model: A subtractive color model using cyan, magenta, yellow, and black inks. It describes ink mixtures rather than RGB light coordinates.
Gamma correction: A nonlinear encoding or decoding operation that relates signal values to image brightness. Nonlinear channel encoding shapes how RGB values represent intensity.
Gamut mapping: The process of remapping colors from one gamut into another. It manages colors that a destination RGB space cannot represent directly.
