Rhamnose

Rhamnose is a six-carbon deoxy sugar found mainly as L-rhamnose in plant and bacterial carbohydrates. It occurs in free form and as a component of complex glycans.

Deoxy sugar: A sugar in which one or more hydroxyl groups are replaced by hydrogen atoms. Rhamnose is a deoxy sugar: it lacks the oxygen-bearing group found at carbon 6 in common hexoses.
Rhamnogalacturonan I: A pectin polysaccharide with a backbone of alternating rhamnose and galacturonic acid residues. This plant cell-wall polymer incorporates rhamnose directly into its repeating backbone.
L-rhamnose isomerase: An enzyme that reversibly converts L-rhamnose into L-rhamnulose. This enzyme catalyzes the first step of a common bacterial route for rhamnose utilization.
Fucose: A six-carbon deoxy sugar found in many organisms, commonly as L-fucose in glycans. Like rhamnose, fucose is a deoxyhexose, but it differs in the position of its missing oxygen and stereochemistry.
Hexose: A monosaccharide containing six carbon atoms. Rhamnose retains six carbons despite having one fewer oxygen than a typical hexose.
Rhamnolipid: A microbial glycolipid consisting of rhamnose linked to one or more hydroxy fatty acids. Some bacteria use rhamnose to build surface-active molecules that aid motility and biofilm formation.
Rhamnulose: A ketose sugar formed from L-rhamnose by isomerization. It is the immediate product of the isomerase reaction that begins rhamnose catabolism.
Ribose: A five-carbon aldose sugar found in RNA and many cellular molecules. Ribose is a common pentose, unlike rhamnose, which has six carbons and lacks oxygen at carbon 6.
L-sugar: A monosaccharide whose configuration belongs to the L series, defined relative to L-glyceraldehyde. Naturally occurring rhamnose in many glycans is the L stereoisomer.
Lipopolysaccharide: A major outer-membrane component of Gram-negative bacteria, composed of lipid A, a core, and an O antigen. Rhamnose can occur in the O-antigen polysaccharides that vary among bacterial strains.
