Rhinocerotoidea

Rhinocerotoidea is a superfamily of perissodactyl mammals that includes living rhinoceroses and extinct relatives such as paraceratheres and amynodonts.

Perissodactyla: An order of hoofed mammals whose weight is borne mainly on the middle toes. Rhinocerotoidea is one branch of this order, alongside horses and tapirs.
Paraceratherium: An extinct genus of hornless, long-necked rhinocerotoids that included exceptionally large land mammals. It is the best-known example of the giant paraceratheres within this superfamily.
Eocene: A geological epoch lasting from about 56 to 33.9 million years ago. Rhinocerotoid diversity expanded markedly during this epoch.
Megaherbivore: A very large herbivorous animal, commonly defined by body mass above one metric ton. Paraceratheres pushed the size range of rhinocerotoids into the megaherbivore extreme.
Rhinocerotidae: The family of living rhinoceroses and their extinct close relatives. This family is the surviving branch of Rhinocerotoidea.
Teleoceras: An extinct genus of short-legged, barrel-bodied rhinocerotids from North America. Its hippopotamus-like proportions contrast with the familiar long-legged image of rhinocerotoids.
Paleogene: The geological period from about 66 to 23 million years ago, comprising the Paleocene, Eocene, and Oligocene. Much of the superfamily's early diversification occurred during this period.
Quaternary extinction event: The widespread loss of large mammals during the late Pleistocene and early Holocene. The woolly rhinoceros was among the rhinocerotoids lost during this extinction episode.
Amynodontidae: An extinct family of rhinocerotoids, including heavily built forms often adapted to wet habitats. Amynodonts represent a distinctive extinct branch outside the living rhino family.
Uintatherium: An extinct large mammal genus with bony cranial protuberances, classified among dinoceratans rather than rhinocerotoids. Its superficially rhino-like skull features illustrate why body shape alone cannot establish relationship.
