Rhyme

Rhyme is the repetition of similar speech sounds, especially in the final stressed syllables of words or poetic lines. It can organize verse, create emphasis, and shape sound patterns.

Phonology: The study of how speech sounds are organized and used in languages. Rhyme depends on which sound similarities a language treats as meaningful.
Perfect rhyme: A rhyme in which words share the same sounds from the final stressed vowel onward, with different preceding sounds. It is the clearest match for the familiar end-rhyme pattern.
End rhyme: Rhyme between the final words or syllables of poetic lines. It is the most familiar placement of rhyme in verse.
Old French literature: Literature written in the varieties of French spoken during the medieval period. Old French verse helped shape the rhyme-rich forms adopted in medieval English poetry.
Alliteration: The repetition of initial consonant sounds in nearby words. Unlike rhyme, it typically repeats sounds at the beginnings of words.
Phoneme: A smallest sound unit that can distinguish words in a language. Phonemes help explain why spelling similarity alone does not make two words rhyme.
Slant rhyme: A partial rhyme in which words have similar but not identical sounds. Near-matches show how poets can evoke rhyme without exact sound identity.
Rap: A musical vocal style built around rhythmically delivered, often rhymed lyrics. Rappers use rhyme to structure verses, intensify wordplay, and fit lyrics to beats.
Medieval English literature: Literature produced in England from the fifth century through the late fifteenth century. Rhyme became a prominent organizing feature of English verse during this period.
Assonance: The repetition of vowel sounds in nearby words, often without matching consonants. It creates sound correspondence without requiring rhyme's full ending match.
