Rib knit

Rib knit is a knitted fabric structure with alternating raised and recessed vertical columns. Its loop arrangement gives it greater crosswise stretch and recovery than plain knitting.

Rib stitch: A knitting stitch pattern that alternates knit and purl wales to form raised ribs. Repeated knit-and-purl wales create the fabric’s defining columns.
Weft knitting: A knitting method in which yarn runs primarily across the fabric, forming successive rows of loops. Rib knit is a weft-knitted structure built from courses of loops.
Ribbed cuff: A close-fitting knitted sleeve or trouser opening made with a rib structure. Rib’s crosswise stretch helps cuffs grip the body and recover after wear.
Seed stitch: A knitting pattern that alternates knit and purl stitches across adjacent stitches and rows. Seed stitch has a bumpy texture but does not form rib knit’s continuous vertical columns.
Knit stitch: A stitch formed by drawing a new yarn loop through an existing loop from front to back. Knit wales form the raised columns in common rib structures.
Warp knitting: A knitting method in which yarns run lengthwise and form loops along the fabric’s length. Its lengthwise yarn paths distinguish it from the course-based structure of rib knit.
Ribbed hem: A garment edge finished with a ribbed knitted band. Ribbing gathers hems and helps keep garment edges close to the body.
Moss stitch: A textured knitting pattern that offsets knit and purl stitches across rows. Its scattered texture contrasts with the aligned columns and strong crosswise stretch of rib knit.
Purl stitch: A stitch formed by drawing a new yarn loop through an existing loop from back to front. Purl wales recede between knit wales, producing the ribbed relief.
Plain knit: A weft-knit structure with loops formed predominantly on one face and purl loops on the other. Unlike plain knit, rib knit presents knit columns on both faces and stretches more across its width.
