Knowra Richard Adolf Zsigmondy Richard Adolf Zsigmondy Richard Adolf Zsigmondy (1865–1929) was an Austrian-German chemist whose research established that colloid solutions contain dispersed particles. He received the 1925 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
Ultramicroscope : An optical instrument that detects particles smaller than the conventional light microscope can resolve by observing scattered light. Zsigmondy developed an ultramicroscope with Henry Siedentopf to reveal particles in colloids.
University of Vienna : A public research university in Vienna, Austria, founded in 1365. Zsigmondy studied chemistry there before pursuing research in Germany.
Henry Siedentopf : A German physicist and microscope designer who collaborated with Zsigmondy on the ultramicroscope. Their collaboration produced an instrument central to Zsigmondy's colloid research.
Heterogeneous mixture : A mixture whose composition is not uniform throughout and whose distinct phases or components can be identified. Zsigmondy's evidence showed that colloid solutions are heterogeneous rather than molecularly uniform.
Tyndall effect : The scattering of light by particles in a medium, making a beam visible from the side. The ultramicroscope used scattered light, the effect that makes colloidal particles detectable.
University of Graz : A public research university in Graz, Austria, founded in 1585. He earned his doctorate in chemistry at Graz in 1889.
Otto Schott : A German chemist and glass technologist who co-founded Schott AG and advanced scientific glassmaking. Schott employed Zsigmondy and helped shape his early work on glass and materials.
Gold sol : A colloidal dispersion of fine gold particles in a liquid, often appearing red or purple. Gold sols provided a vivid system for studying colloidal particles and their optical properties.
Brownian motion : The irregular motion of small particles suspended in a fluid, caused by collisions with molecules of the fluid. Zsigmondy studied this motion as evidence that colloids contain discrete particles.
Schott AG : A German glass manufacturer founded in Jena in 1884 by Otto Schott, Ernst Abbe, and Carl Zeiss. Zsigmondy worked at Schott, where glass research informed his later investigations of colloids.
