Richard Dedekind

Richard Dedekind was a German mathematician whose work on real numbers, algebraic number theory, and arithmetic foundations helped establish modern abstract algebra.

Dedekind cut: A partition of the rational numbers that defines a real number by separating all smaller rationals from all larger ones. His construction gave a precise account of real numbers without assuming them in advance.
Dedekind domain: An integral domain in which every nonzero proper ideal factors uniquely into prime ideals. This algebraic structure generalizes the arithmetic Dedekind developed for rings of integers.
Georg Cantor: A German mathematician who founded set theory and developed the theory of infinite cardinalities. Dedekind corresponded with Cantor and independently clarified the mathematics of infinity.
Unique factorization: The property that each element factors into irreducibles in essentially one way, up to units and order. Ideals restore unique factorization when algebraic integers themselves lack it.
