The Principal Navigations : A collection of English voyage accounts, trade records, and exploration narratives compiled by Richard Hakluyt. This vast anthology made his case for English maritime expansion through accounts of earlier voyages.
Geography : The study of places, environments, spatial relationships, and the processes that shape them. Hakluyt used geographic knowledge to assess routes, regions, and possible English settlements.
Westminster School : An English public school founded in the medieval period and located beside Westminster Abbey in London. Hakluyt’s schooling exposed him to maps and geographic books that helped inspire his interests.
Divers Voyages Touching the Discovery of America : A 1582 collection of English and other accounts of voyages to the Americas, compiled by Richard Hakluyt. This early publication made a focused case for English exploration and colonization in North America.
Spanish colonization of the Americas : The establishment of Spanish rule and settlements in the Americas following European voyages of exploration. Hakluyt treated Spain’s American empire as both a model of success and a rival to challenge.

French colonization of the Americas : French exploration, settlement, and imperial claims in the Americas from the sixteenth century onward. French activity in North America formed part of the competition Hakluyt invoked for English action.
