Knowra Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick (1428–1471), was an English magnate and military commander whose shifting alliances helped determine the course of the Wars of the Roses.
Edward IV of England : King of England from 1461 to 1470 and again from 1471 to 1483, he was a leading Yorkist ruler. Warwick helped bring Edward to the throne, then turned against him and briefly drove him into exile.
Calais : An English-held port on the French coast from 1347 to 1558 and a major military and commercial base. As captain of Calais, Warwick commanded troops and a strategic foothold used in his political struggles.
Wars of the Roses : A series of dynastic conflicts in fifteenth-century England between rival branches of the royal House of Plantagenet. Warwick’s rise, defections, and death unfolded within this struggle between Yorkist and Lancastrian claims.
Readeption of Henry VI : The brief restoration of Henry VI to the English throne from October 1470 to April 1471. Warwick’s alliance with the Lancastrians made this short-lived restoration possible.
