Richard Rado

Richard Rado (1906–1989) was a German-born British mathematician whose work shaped modern combinatorics, graph theory, and set theory.

Ramsey theory: The study of conditions that force order within sufficiently large or infinite structures. Rado’s theorems helped establish the field’s central questions about unavoidable structure.
Rado's theorem: A characterization of finite systems of linear equations that are partition regular over the natural numbers. This theorem is Rado’s signature result in additive combinatorics.
Paul Erdős: A Hungarian mathematician known for prolific collaboration and major contributions to combinatorics and number theory. Erdős and Rado shared influential work on Ramsey theory and infinite combinatorics.
Berlin: The capital of Germany and a major European center of science, culture, and government. Rado was born and educated in Berlin before leaving Germany.
Rado's conjecture: A conjecture concerning chromatic numbers of infinite graphs and their finite subgraphs. The conjecture extended questions Rado studied and remains a landmark problem in infinite graph theory.
Infinite combinatorics: The study of combinatorial structures on infinite sets and their properties. Much of Rado’s work extends finite combinatorial ideas to infinite settings.
Rado graph: The unique countable graph in which every finite extension pattern occurs. This highly symmetric infinite graph is named for Rado and illustrates his graph-theoretic legacy.
Alfred Tarski: A Polish-American logician and mathematician known for work in logic, set theory, and algebra. Rado’s early mathematical environment in Germany included study with Tarski.
University of Berlin: A historic Berlin university founded in 1810, now known as Humboldt University of Berlin. Rado completed his doctoral studies at the University of Berlin.
London Mathematical Society: A British society founded in 1865 to promote and support mathematical research. Rado was elected president of the Society, reflecting his standing in British mathematics.
