Rickshaw

A small passenger vehicle traditionally pulled by a person, later adapted to pedal and motor propulsion. Its forms include the two-wheeled hand-pulled rickshaw and the three-wheeled auto rickshaw.

Hand-pulled rickshaw: A two-wheeled passenger vehicle pulled by a person walking between its shafts. This is the original form behind the broader rickshaw category.
Japan: An East Asian island country with a long history of urban and regional transport innovation. The hand-pulled rickshaw appeared in Japan in the late nineteenth century.
Urban transportation: The movement of people and goods within towns and cities. Rickshaws fill short-distance transport needs within dense urban networks.
Human-powered transport: Transport powered directly by human effort, including walking, cycling, and pushing or pulling vehicles. Hand-pulled and cycle rickshaws make human labor a central source of propulsion.

Cycle rickshaw: A passenger vehicle propelled by a driver pedaling a bicycle-like mechanism. Pedals replaced walking as the source of human power.
Tokyo: Japan’s capital and one of the world’s largest metropolitan areas. Tokyo became an early center of rickshaw use after the vehicle’s introduction.
Paratransit: Flexible passenger transport operating alongside fixed-route public transit. Rickshaws often provide on-demand trips where scheduled transit is inconvenient.
Urban labor: Work performed within cities, including transport services and other informal occupations. Rickshaw work connects passenger mobility to precarious urban livelihoods.
Tuk-tuk: A small motorized three-wheeled passenger vehicle common in parts of Asia and elsewhere. Tuk-tuk is a regional name for a vehicle closely associated with the auto rickshaw.
