Right to a fair trial

The right to a fair trial is a legal guarantee of an impartial hearing and adequate procedural protections. It applies to criminal charges and, in many legal systems, disputes over civil rights and obligations.

Presumption of innocence: A legal principle that treats an accused person as innocent until guilt is established according to law. It places the burden on the prosecution rather than requiring defendants to prove innocence.
Due process: A legal principle requiring fair procedures before government deprives a person of life, liberty, or property. Fair-trial protections are a central application of due process in adjudication.
Magna Carta: A 1215 charter that constrained royal authority and influenced later ideas about lawful judgment and liberty. Its provisions helped shape the historical tradition of judgment according to law.
